Kolkata: The 45th Kolkata International Book Fair will kick off on February 28 and run until March 13. The central thematic country this year is Bangladesh.
Addressing the press conference, the General Secretary of the Publishers and Booksellers Guild, Tridib Chatterjee, said that to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Golden Jubilee of the independence of the Bangladesh, the theme of the Kolkata Book Fair is Bangladesh.
“Due to the centenary of the birth of Bangabandhu and the 50 years of independence of Bangladesh, this year’s theme is Bangladesh. Bangladesh Day will be celebrated on March 3 and 4. The fair will be inaugurated on February 28 by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee,” Chatterjee said.
Chatterjee also said that poets like Sanjib Chattopadhyay and KL Khalid will be present during the celebration.
Speaking about pandemic protocols, the general secretary of the Publishers and Booksellers Guild said that although there will be more than 600 stalls, there will be 35% open space for ventilation.
“Several new publishers are setting up booths. The stall size has been kept small so that there is more open space. Publishers have suffered losses over the past two years and despite the lack of space, all have agreed to set up the stalls. Everyone attending the fair will be required to wear masks,” Chatterjee added.
Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, chief coordinator and national implementation committee for Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary celebration, said the Bangladesh pavilion will be based on Bangabandhu’s iconic speech on March 7, 1971.
“Not just Bangabandhu’s speech, other historical moments of Bangladesh will be showcased in the pavilion. Three doors are apparently dedicated to Bangladesh. 42 editors will come from Bangladesh and 50 booths will be set up in Bangladesh,” Chowdhury said.
Chairman of the Publishers and Booksellers Guild, Sudhangshu Sekhar Dey, said the Kolkata Book Fair has been recognized by the International Association of Geneva Publishers and Geneva has also incorporated the Kolkata International Book Fair into the calendar of book fairs published by them.
In addition to Bangladesh, Britain, the United States, Russia, Italy, Japan, Iran, Spain, Argentina, Mexico and other Latin American countries will participate in the Kolkata Book Fair.
