Calcutta, December 14 (PTI) The 45th Kolkata International Book Fair will begin on January 30 amid strict security measures related to COVID-19, officials said on Tuesday.

It will be an open congregation that will be held in Central Park in Salt Lake given the pandemic, they said sadly.

The mask will be mandatory for visitors and participants, officials said after a meeting at the Secretary of State with the organizers – the Publishers and Booksellers Guild.

The number of kiosks would remain the same but their size would be reduced, they added.

“There will be an opportunity for book lovers to view and buy books off the shelves to ensure social distancing,” an official said.

About 580 publishers and booksellers participate in the book fair, billed as the largest in the world in terms of attendance, according to industry sources.

The book fair will continue until February 13 and the thematic country will be Bangladesh to mark the centenary of the birth of its founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee year of his independence.

The eighth Kolkata Literature Festival would also be held in Central Park next to the fair.

The book fair did not take place this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
