A fire broke out Tuesday evening at the Nilkhet book market in Dhaka.

No casualties were reported immediately and 10 fire units rushed to the scene, said senior fire station and civil defense department officer Shahjahan Sikder.

Many bookstores were devastated by the fire which broke out around 7:30 p.m.

The book market was closed on the weekly bank holiday for area markets on Tuesday.

The reasons for the fire could not be immediately confirmed. The flames were brought under control around 9 a.m., said Lt. Col. Zillur Rahman, fire director (operations).

He, however, said the fire that burned down 30 to 35 shops in Shahjalal market may have originated from an overheated switch on the first floor of the market.

Sultan Mahmud, a store owner, said that even though it was a public holiday for the market, many owners kept their bookstores open as they were suffering from a financial crisis due to a prolonged closure of businesses amid of the Covid situation.
