The benefits of Bamboo are not new, but the interest it presents is. From being a “wood of the poor”, bamboo is increasingly known as the “most promising wood substitute”. or the ??Material of the Future??, the developed countries are as interested in it as the developing countries. Bamboo is a wild-growing woody grass, but was defined as a tree in the Indian Forest Act 1927.

Indian forest law, which included bamboo in the list of timber trees?? was supposed to place restrictions on the bamboo trade to protect forests, but it also made it difficult to grow and transport bamboo across state lines. Non-uniform rules and regulations in different states for different species of bamboo have also resulted in tedious negotiations with forest service and police officials.

The recent amendment (in the Forest Laws, which removed bamboo from the list of trees), is a first step in the right direction. This, if implemented in spirit and letter, has the potential to bring bamboo out of the backyard?? in the mainstream.

In this regard, a book written by Mr. Kamesh Salam, Former President of World Bamboo Organization ??Green Gold, Bamboo Value Chain Management and Sustainable Development in India is launched for the state of Manipur by Dr. Bhabeswar Tongbram, Chief Visiting Vice Chancellor, Manipur Technical University, Imphal as Senior Guest.
